Orthodox Cross
A cross symbol associated with the Eastern Orthodox Church.
A type of Christian cross prominently used in the liturgy and architecture of the Eastern Orthodox Church. Unlike the simpler Latin cross, it includes additional horizontal and slanted crossbars. The lower slanted bar is said to represent the two thieves crucified alongside Christ, one ascending to heaven and the other descending to hell. The smaller top bar sometimes seen symbolizes the sign placed above Jesus that read 'INRI'. It is venerated by believers in Russian, Greek, Serbian, and other Orthodox traditions. Its design evolved during the Byzantine Empire and has remained a distinctive emblem of Orthodox Christianity ever since.
