This subgroup covers flags for administrative subdivisions such as states, prefectures, provinces, cantons, and territories. Technically they are encoded as “tag sequence” flags, meaning the design appears when a sequence of characters is combined, similar to national flags. They let users express local pride, specify an exact location within a country, or highlight regional events. Support is still inconsistent across platforms, but coverage is expanding with each Unicode update and vendor rollout.
