Chess Pawn
One of the most basic pieces in chess. It moves forward one square, two on its first move. It captures diagonally.
The pawn is the most numerous piece on the chessboard and can only move forward one square at a time. On its first move, it has the special option to advance two squares. It captures diagonally forward and is the only piece subject to en passant captures. Upon reaching the farthest rank, it can promote to a queen, knight, rook, or bishop of the player’s choice. Pawns are central to strategy, often fighting for control of the board’s center and creating passed pawns. In the endgame, remaining pawns frequently decide the outcome by queening or restricting the opponent.
